After the printing press was invented,1 stories could be written down and read by many people. The German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm decided to write folktales. They traveled all over the German countryside,2 asking people to tell them stories.
An old woman became the Grimm brothers’ most important storyteller. She told them the now-famous fairy tales of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “the Frog Prince”. When the Grimm brothers wrote their book of fairy tales, they tried to stay true to3 the original4 spoken folktales.
Thanks to5 the efforts of people like the Grimm brothers, the folktales of old are alive and well today. Do not be surprised if, one day, your own children fall in love with “Snow White” and “Cinderella”. They would not be the first.

格林童话一直是许多孩子童年的良伴。格林兄弟在收集故事的过程中，尽量维持故事的原貌，以保留故事的原汁原味(in collecting the stories, the Grimm brothers were careful to keep them close to the original tales as told by the people in order to keep their original essence)。有时候，同一个故事有好几个不同的版本，格林兄弟就把它们合成一个 (sometimes, there were several versions of the same story, which the Grimm brothers combined into one)，并把他们修改的地方做成详细的笔记 (they made careful notes of what changes they made)。
People like the Grimm brothers helped keep folktales alive and well by writing them down and putting them into books.
